Introduced, respectively, the Hon. Marco Beltrandi and the Ministry for Foreign affairs and by the Hon. Cappato and Hon. Pannella of the European Comission, an interview on the choices made by the Commission that made the logo "Together since 1957" to celebrate the 50th anniversay of the Rome Treaty.
It was a young Polish, Szymon Skrzypczak, that won a competition for the best sybol in the 50th anniversay of the European Union, launched on the 6th of July by the European Community’s instititutions last year. Polish. Not English. Therefore, why was an English expression used? And, most of all, why is it considered the best option?
Considering that the logo, «TOGETHER since 1957,» is an English expression; in terms of conveying a message, it is recognized, once ahain, that the staus holds the "queen language" status in Europe and the other languages are the "worker’s languages."
«since 1957» is not actually translated in other countries, as a large part of trhe States, inclduing Great Britain, joined the Union after said date.
The regulations of the competitions to not oversee any type of modification in the logo for the other 20 languages, which,it has already been noted, has caused protests within the Commission, such a "convoluted solution" has given way to counter-productive linguistic errors in the Greek version, for example, where the second 4 letter word has been deprived of two of its characters: it reads OLOI MA instea of OLOI MAZI, meaning TOGETH instead of TOGETHER. Germany, on the other hand, has chosen not to adopt the logo, expressing its freedom of choice to not submit to decisions that don’t reflect the spirit that supposedly animate’s Europe’s linguistic equality.
It is essential that Italy should express disapproval for the Commission’s decision and rejects the the logo, especially as it concerns the website that’s meant to promote the 50th anniversary and the different demonstrations in the English, French, German, but not Italian.
