Statement by Giorgio Pagano
“The motion launched by the Hon. Pescante is necessary to protect Italian? Actually, what it’s protecting is English.” Giorgio Pagano, Secretary of the “Esperanto” Radical Association, said so. “The signatories claim that they wish to preotect our language from the trilingual invasion, but at the same time, they take it upon themelves to promoted only English, or, in other words, monolinguism. What would be the advantage for Italian if French and German were put aside in order to improve the Albion’s language, is a difficult concept for us to understand: With one hand, has cut the funds from those bodies that contribute to protecting our language, and with the other, imposes that teachers of every subject must be at the same level as English mothertongue, our goverment is on the road to destorying our language and doesn’t seem to have intention of stopping any time soon,” Pagano continued.
“Then again, imposing English on the other EU countires, including France and Germany, we have the honour of sharing the same common evil, instead of sharing the multilinguism that was promised by the treaties. In the meantime, the pamphlet that has been advertising the use of the International Language has been sitting in the desk drawer since 1995, therefore we think it appropriate to continue talking about the collabortaion that goes hand in hand with the United Kingdom’s linguistic colonization, a country which saves 18 billion euros a year at the expense of other European countries that spend 350 euros a year to study English, while, in 2004, Great Britain removed the obbligation to study a second language in schools.
