10 over 15 prime-time movies, 2/3 of the total amount, are originally in English. Most of them are of American production, with american actors and directors.
These are the result of this week’s monitoring on broadcasting schedules. The results are visible everyday on our site.
These data reflect an obvious reality: Italy – which splendour of Cinecittà, Fellini and Monicelli are long gone – and Europe in general, are subdued to monolinguism and anglophone culture, to the detriment of european culture and linguistic democracy.
But it’s not just this. For decades, cinema has been represented the main tool of penetration into the common imaginery. The European youth grow up and mold themselves of a 80%-made-in-the-Usa filmography. This way our youth know better New York, Los Angeles and Chicago, and know nor imagine nothing of Wien, Prague or Lisbon, much nearer. Or maybe they know who were the American’s Presidents but they not know about present leders in European countries.
