Pagano (Era): a 24-hours cultural marathon in Italian schools in the name of culture’s love!

Esperanto Radikala Asocio was in Barcelona, capital of Catalonia, for “Books and roses holiday”. We departed from Rome on a book ship, with the books from the Nonviolence Library. This day is dedicated to Saint George (Sant Jordi in Catalan) who as tells the legend killed the dragon and from the bush born from the dragon’s blood he picked up a rose to give to Sabra, the freed princess. In 1926 a valencian publisher, Vicent Clavel i Andrés, had the idea to trace a line between Cervantes’ death anniversary and the legend of Saint George. Then the holiday was born: in this day, man gives their woman a rose, receving a book in exchange. Lately, many man use to give a book, too, together with the rose. Unesco declared 23th of April “Word Book and Copyright Day”.

«This is undobtely one of the most interesting event from the cultural point of view – and not only from that – in Catalonia. I’m impressedy by the popularity of this event and by the luckily union between culture and love, or, to better say, love for culture, which modifiy the city, filling up streets of roses and books», comments from Barcelona Giorgio Pagano.

«For me, it was symbolic a visit to the “House of Italians” in Barcelona – adds Pagano – not only because it is among the oldest in the world (it was built in 1865), but also because Italian schools are favoured here by catalans and even foreigners. Director Cabria told me of Dutch who see in our education system more attention to thinking, to culture, in order to develop critical sense, and than, to free people. It’s outstanding the contribution of Italian school to the holiday: what we Radical know as Oratory martahon, here becomes Cultural marathon. 24 hours devoted to knowledge, where youth of all ages read the classics like the Odissey. As Christian martyrs during Roman Empire, these Italians struggle against cultural genocide committed by traitor Ministry of Education who adore the angloamerican Golden calf».

«It would be nice to promote, along with Unesco, in every country a Book Day on April 23th, in order to promote democracy and linguistic justice, even where, like in Italy, they are not appreciated. It could be a chance for an equal exchange of book in the local language, but also in Esperanto. Esperanto is not only the 140th literary language in the world, but it is also the language of nonviolence, equal opportunity and human dignity. A book for humanity in the humanity language!», concludes Pagano.
